Pokémon’s 30th Anniversary Teaser
A first look at the teaser and what 30 years of Pokémon could bring
On December 31st, The Pokémon Company dropped the first teaser for what’s shaping up to be a massive year for one of gaming’s most enduring franchises. As 2026 dawns, Pokémon is officially kicking off its 30th anniversary celebrations, marking three decades since the original Pokémon Red and Green launched in Japan back in February 1996.
The teaser itself isn’t a full announcement, it’s a short animation of the newly revealed 30th anniversary logo, featuring a “fat” Pikachu, accompanied by a simple message: “the Pokémon 30th anniversary begins!”

Why 30 Years Is a Big Deal
Thirty years in gaming is a rare milestone. Pokémon has transcended being just a game, it’s influenced trading cards, TV shows, movies, toys, and community events around the world. From late-night battles against friends with a link cable on the original Game Boy, to massive online tournaments and expansive mobile titles, the franchise has shaped childhoods and brought people together across generations.
Seeing that Pikachu logo evolve through the trailer isn’t just cute, it’s a visual reminder of how many of us have grown alongside these games.
What Fans Are Hoping For
Already, fan discussions across social platforms are buzzing with what comes next, especially around the idea of revisiting the classics. One of the biggest hopes among longtime Pokémon players is that the 30th anniversary might finally mean bringing the original Game Boy games back to modern hardware, such as via the Nintendo Switch Online service. Rumours are everywhere, with players hoping that titles like Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow and maybe even later classics will get official modern re-releases.
As a fan of the re-release of these games on the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console years ago, giving fans a way to play these games again on the latest console and integrate with Pokémon Home is high up on my wishlist for the anniversary.
With Lego and McDonalds Pokémon collaborations and special TCG sets already teased for 2026, the year already feels primed for celebration.
Beyond the Classics
The 30th anniversary year isn’t just about looking back. There’s already new Pokémon games slated for 2026, including:
- Pokémon Pokopia an upcoming life simulation-style title for the Nintendo Switch 2, where you control a Ditto exploring and building among Pokémon.
- Pokémon Champions, bringing competitive battles to consoles and mobile this year.
These new experiences show the franchise expanding while still holding onto its roots, weaving nostalgia with modern gameplay.
What This Anniversary Means
Celebrating 30 years isn’t just about anniversaries, it’s about the thousands of memories
players have tied to this series. Whether your first Pokémon was sent into battle against a
rival who always chose the “better type,” or you remember trading with a friend using a link
cable, Pokémon has a way of turning simple moments into lifelong memories.
This anniversary promises to be a reminder of that history and hopefully a chance to relive
some of it in new ways. Whether through re-releases, surprises yet to be officially announced,
or community events that bring us together once again, 2026 is shaping up to be a
nostalgia-packed year for trainers everywhere.
Stay tuned as we follow the news, rumours, and announcements and celebrate the world of
Pokémon, past and present.
